One of my favorite up and coming graphic designers, Paul Chin, happens to be from right here in the Cayman Islands (by way of Uni in Toronto).  He’s been doing a fun little bonus for some of his customers at the local coffee joint by giving away free receipt sketches, and today he did one for me.  Yes, that’s me soaring in a flying dunk.  Check him out.

One of my professors once told me “illustrators are the rock stars of the design world”.  Today this sentiment was affirmed and solidified.  I mean, it has to be true otherwise Kim wouldn’t be rocking with your boy.
By the way, you can’t see it very clearly from this shot but the label on the tongue shows that these are Hanukkah variant Dunks (as misspelt in my handwriting lol).

Free Receipt Sketches

So far, this little project of mine is going well!  I seem to be giving all of them away (there’s only one left in the cup right now).  Today, I started my Christmas themed ones (I’m only doing two main ones since I don’t wanna overkill things, as is customary behaviour this time of year) and gave it away INSTANTLY.  In fact, the recipient came in BEFORE it was done and sat down and waited for it!

I did an elf today and tomorrow I’m gonna do a rendition of Santa.  Stephanie seemed pretty content.

So that’s how it’s going.  If you’re in Cayman, swing by Café del Sol and you might get yourself a free receipt sketch by yours truly!

Free Receipt Sketches: UPDATE

The project seems to be going well.  I gave away two today (at once) and even had a disappointed customer who came in prepared with today’s password and everything (“Darjeeling gets me on the ceiling”)!  She decided that rather than take one today, she’ll come in tomorrow as my shift starts and swoop in to claim it, immediately.

I even had a customer ask about getting it done on a t-shirt before I came in.  My coworker had no idea what to tell her so I hope she comes back tomorrow while I’m on or someone at least takes a number/gives her my contact details.

This is what I like to see in my craft: positive response.

Tomorrow’s password: “First Mate on deck, Captain”

Some motion graphics I’ve been tinkering with, unifying my sound design work with some design. I took a bunch of things I learnt from Video Copilot and tried to utilise them in one piece.

Audio is from my song “Customers”.

Free Receipt Sketches at Café del Sol

This is a little project I started on my last day at work, this summer, and now that I’m back home for a month, I’ve decided to make it more fun!

Every day I work, I plan to do a free sketch on some receipt paper and give it away to a random customer.  No strings attached.  Well, there are a few strings.  Every day, I’ll tweet/Facebook status a password for the sketch of the day and the first person to come in, while I’m on shift, and tell me the password gets the sketch.  Simple as that.

Now there is some wiggle-room to these rules.  I know that a VERY minor portion of my twitter followers actually live in Cayman so in all honesty, ANYONE who comes in and rattles off the password deserves a sketch.  And if we’re not too busy, I’ll do one for them.  Also, because there will be days like today (when NO ONE claimed it), I may just give it away to ANYONE, should I feel so inclined.

So now you know.  Pay attention to my tweets, if you’re not already my friend IRL and therefore on Facebook, and if you enjoy fancy coffees and free scribbley artwork on receipt paper!

2009 is almost over

And I’ve gotta say, I’m well pleased with the way it’s turned out.  2007 and 2008 had real potential to be phenomenal years but there was always something real petty, but real major, that screwed things up.  However, I haven’t really come across any of that this year.  In fact, 2009 has been a year of great personal progress for me and I can only hope 2010 will continue with this trend of onward and upward.
