We Are The World 25
So I sort of have a love/hate relationship with this song. I was especially put off by the Lil Wayne x Autotune combo. T-Pain, I could stand since it’s kinda his thing and it’s been established that he can actually sing but Lil Wayne was just really jarring.
Also, I don’t even know how to feel about the rap mega-verse with LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, will.i.am, Busta Rhymes, someone who appeared to be Swizz Beatz and others. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that the hip-hop community is a) being given a shot to shine as a legitimate force for change and b) taking this opportunity and using it, but it was really a lot to take in. Perhaps more of the Kanye-style ad-libbed verses would have been less in your face.
Regardless, I’m glad that 25 years later, influential musicians can still get together and use their power for good. I’m about to buy this off iTunes right now. And I’ll even admit, it brought me to tears. The last song to do that was the Glee rendition of Somebody to Love. It was a combination of Celine Dion’s timely entrance with Lionel Ritchie counting her in and Wyclef in general that plugged me.
