2009 is almost over
And I’ve gotta say, I’m well pleased with the way it’s turned out. 2007 and 2008 had real potential to be phenomenal years but there was always something real petty, but real major, that screwed things up. However, I haven’t really come across any of that this year. In fact, 2009 has been a year of great personal progress for me and I can only hope 2010 will continue with this trend of onward and upward.
This year, I became so much more savvy a creator. My illustration has grown in leaps and bounds, both personally and professionally. Additionally, my music has also got a lot to show for it too. In roughly 2.5 years, I’ll be leaving OCAD and Toronto with my Bachelor of Design in Illustration and who-knows-how-many musical projects under my belt but, quite frankly, I feel like the best days of my life are yet to come. Don’t get me wrong, I love OCAD and I’m learning so much from my time here but, at the same time, I feel like it may also be holding me back. On the other hand, that could be me too eager and not realising what I have yet to learn. And let’s forget that, lest hubris take the wheel.
Still, I can’t wait to get out into the workforce as a creative professional. In this year alone, I’ve done so much to start getting my name out there as a viable hire. Let’s review, shall we? I’ve…
- Done promotional design work for events sponsored by some of the biggest brands in Cayman
- Done pre-launch work for my in-progress t-shirt line
- Completed 1.5 (2 by the end of the year) shoe customisation commissions
- Given away free sketches to customers at Café del Sol
- Bought a guitar
- Released my first mixtape
- Gotten songs from said mixtape played on the radio, multiple times a day
- Played my first gig in Cayman
- Played my first gig in Toronto
- Gotten PAID for my music
- Collaborated with another Producer
- Learnt to DJ in a week
- DJ’d a house party that weekend
- Hand-coded HTML/CSS for my gallery
- Done likewise for this Tumblr
All in all, it’s been a VERY productive year for me. Hopefully in 2010, I’ll be able to continue on this upward exponent. By the time I hit the workforce, for serious, I hope to be able to keep the same energy pouring into my work, consistently. I’ll be a very happy camper when I’m getting paid to do the things I love to do regularly, WITHOUT all that pesky school in the way.
Also, here’s hoping that 2010 will mark the return of the dating awesome girls. 2009 hasn’t exactly done marvels for my awkward-around-girls plight :)
